Poothicote - Important persons in history

In the 2,000 years of our Kalikavu family's history, we know many details about its Poothicote branch for the past 350 years..  During this period, Poothicote family has produced many  outstanding personalities about whom we all can be proud of.

Oommen ( Thomas) who had the courage to stand up to the imperial powers and participate in Coonan Curiz ( bended cross) saga in 1653 is the first in this rostrum of our great ancestors.

 

Rev. Fr.Poothicote  Kuruvila Kunju Thommen, a priest of the Niranam church who lead the  Syrian Orthodox Church as the chief supporter of Malakara Metropolitan Dianacius I during a very perilous situation in Kerala history during the latter half of the 18th century is another great luminary of the period.

 

Judge Grandpa Kochitty  Kuruvila, the great patriach of Poothicote family stands out without comparison in our family's history.

 

Cherian Puthen Purackel who carried the legacy of his illustrious father, Judge Grandpa, was great personality of the period.

 

Kujachonda Medayil, the 5th son of Judge Grandpa was one of the first Keralites to receive English Education from the British teachers.  He was a deeply devoted Christian and his life was exemplary.

 

Kuruviala Varkey, Manalil, a grandson of Judge Grandpa was one of the first BA graduates in Kerala and he rose to become the registration director of the government. He was highly respected by Maha Raja and loved by the people.

 

E. John Philipose and E. John Jacob of Elanjickel were great-grandsons of Judge Grandpa. Both of them were highly respected political leaders in Kerala and both of them were cabinet ministers in government.

 

I have written about the historic imprints the above people made as the history of our family was narrated.

 

In the following pages, a brief biography of  few other illustrious members of Poothicote family  who made their footprints in the history of their lifetime.

After Judge Grandpa Kochitty Kuruvila, The Very Reverend Cherian Thomas is the most famous personality in history of the Poothicote family. He was the grandson of Judge Grandpa and the son of Cherian Puthen Purackel.

 

 

 

 

 


H. G. Kuriakose Mar Koorilos

 

H. G. was born as George Kurian on May 1, 1935 as the second son of Poothiyottu Paayikandathil Cherian George of Mepral and Annamma. He was ordained deacon by Mor Gheevarghese Gregorius of Ankamali in 1956. The late Catholicos Paulos II (then Metropolitan Mor Philoxenus Paulose) ordained him priest in 1956. Fr. George Kurian became the vicar of St. John's church, Mepral (Thiruvalla). Fr. George Kurian was consecrated bishop Mor Kurilose by Patriarch Ya`qub III on July 21, 1974. His Grace served as the bishop of Niranam, Quilon and Thumpamon until March 21, 1995 when he passed away. His remains are interred in Mikhayel Mor Dionysius chapel, Adoor. Mor Kuriakose was an accomplished orator and an able administrator who established many educational institutions in the diocese. His Grace served as the President of the Sunday School Association for a long time. During a very difficult period in the history of the church, His Grace provided able leadership for the church.
